Fortificating, blockading and acting as infantry reserves were the daily activities of the engineers. During combat operations, the engineer units mined the forward area of the positions at night and repaired damaged mine fields. During the day, homemade mines and traps were made.
In the encirclement or "Motti" battles on the north-eastern side of the Ladoga, the engineers fought alongside the infantry as riflemen, opening supply routes, closing encirclements with mines and breakwaters, and destroying enemy colonies and dug-in tanks. Further north, the engineers built hooking routes in unpaved terrain and created blockades. Especially in Salla and Petsamo regions, engineers were tasked to plough over a total of 3 500 kilometres of road.
