Battle of Ilomantsi
A withdrawal also occurred from the Maaselkä Isthmus. After a heavy delaying phase, Group Raappana at Ilomantsi separated and encircled two Red Army divisions, then defeated them in "motti" battles. Soviet forces sent to assist were also repelled. This battle involved wilderness warfare, but even there, Finnish artillery was able to provide support by firing 36,000 shells over ten days.
The Finns captured heavy equipment from the fleeing Soviet divisions, including over one hundred cannons and nearly one hundred mortars. Finnish casualties amounted to nearly 1,700 men killed and wounded. The Red Army lost 3,200 men killed alone. The Battle of Ilomantsi, which ended in mid-August, was the last major offensive against Finland. The Red Army also regrouped into defensive positions.
